How to Support Accidental Managers: Insights from HR Expert Nicola Roke

At our recent HR Leaders Learning Breakfast in Birmingham, Four Squared Recruitment welcomed HR professionals from across the region for a morning of learning, networking and practical insights. One of the standout discussions came from Nicola Roke of Danton HR & Training, who explored the challenges of supporting “accidental managers” and how organisations can better prepare future leaders for success.

In this follow-up conversation, Four Squared Recruitment Managing Director Emma Richardson sits down with Nicola to discuss leadership readiness, building confidence in new managers and the steps businesses can take to develop effective people leaders.

Key Takeaways from the Discussion

Start leadership development early

Ideally, organisations should begin preparing future managers 12 to 18 months before they take on formal leadership responsibilities. This gives individuals time to develop the skills and confidence needed to lead effectively.

Define what good leadership looks like

Clear expectations are essential. New managers need to understand what effective leadership looks like within their organisation and how they are expected to support and develop their teams.

Provide practical tools and support

Leadership development doesn’t always require complex programmes. Checklists, guidance documents, conversation frameworks and management toolkits can make a significant difference.

Focus on core leadership skills

Communication, interpersonal skills, decision-making and prioritisation remain the foundations of effective leadership and should be developed long before an individual takes on people management responsibilities.

Looking Ahead

The discussion reinforced an important message for HR and business leaders alike: great managers are developed, not simply appointed.
